She often sat in as head of research and as editor of the Periscope section as well. While at Newsweek, Karla won a Fulbright scholarship to Germany for young American journalists.  She has also received reporting grants from the Carnegie and Knight Foundations and the Scripps Howard Foundation for work that took her from the shores of the Puget Sound in Washington state to the banks of the Ganges in India. She has interviewed Nobel Prize winners, religious leaders, Olympic athletes, World Champions, and regular folks, too.

Karla earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. While there, the Religion Newswriters Association named her one of 10 national finalists for Student Writer of the Year. Karla graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College.

Before becoming a journalist, Karla worked as an actor, model and singer in New York City. For seven years, she was the lead singer of an ’80s cover band, and continues to moonlight as a wedding singer. She was also tapped by New York Road Runners to sing at the 2010 ING New York City Marathon, in addition to other races like the Fifth Avenue Mile and NY Mini 10K.
